THE NECESSITY OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION

07/12/2021 | Doç. Dr. Ahmet TAN | 436

In today's world, it has become a sine qua non of democratic politics for political parties and politicians to tell about themselves and what they do. Every political formation and its representatives, who are in power and aiming for power, need to convince the public that they need support. In order to win the hearts and minds of the target audience, the use of appropriate communication tools and good political language has become too important to neglect.

In a period when the border between perception and reality becomes so ambiguous, and sometimes perception replaces reality, it becomes inevitable for political parties that ignore political communication to pay costs.

Political parties and politicians usually come to mind to work with an organization/agency on political communication when the election process approaches. Now it is necessary to see that this is not enough. Even though the intensity of political communication is low compared to election periods, it is obvious that it will be beneficial to implement it continuously in order for the ruling parties to continue the public support and for the work done to be understood/supported by the society.

"We are doing. What do we need to explain? People will definitely see it. It's not enough to say "do good and throw it into the sea".

You will do it, and you must clearly explain to the public what you are doing, how, with what effort, and what the possible consequences are. You should even be able to use different languages for different segments of society.

Why did I take up this issue?

Because I have seen that the government has done a lot in almost every field in the last twenty years, but these things are not explained or explained enough.

There are exceptions, of course, and I'll mention one.

We can explain this situation through some examples;

When the People's Alliance decided to change the system, according to the polls made at that time, the public support for the Presidential System was around thirty-five percent. While it was explained what the Parliamentary System, which was implemented with a good work in a short time, brought and brought to Turkey, what the Presidential System would bring to the country was explained.

In less than a year, the system change was presented to the nation and positive results were obtained. The political communication used to achieve this result had a great contribution.

However, we see that the same path is not followed in all important matters. The political communication gap on the important work done is quickly used by the opposition by turning it into a negative campaign.

Despite all the internal and external objections and attempts to prevent it, we have seen the same shortcomings in the process of major projects that have been implemented. Projects done. Plus values were revealed, but the effect of the storms during the construction process was talked about more.

Almost the same thing happened during the construction of Istanbul Airport, Marmaray, Eurasia Tunnel and all similar projects. The negative campaign got louder. In the form of a campaign, unimaginable things were told to the society.

Just looking at the prominent headlines of the counter-campaign on Istanbul Airport and the attitudes of the people involved will show you everything. What hasn't been said... The voice of those who don't make it out of the project came out more than those who made and supported the project.

So just doing is not enough. What has been done must also be explained and a communication strategy must be in place.

This deficit does not only show itself in large projects, but also in important areas such as the defense industry, which the world is watching carefully. We follow the great works and breakthroughs in this field from the broadcasts of foreign countries, especially Greece.

Now, it is mentioned that a model based on investment, employment, production and exports has been put into practice in the economy. Since we are moving to a new model

, the minuses of the old, the pluses of the new society; should be explained in detail by experts and relevant persons.

Just like in the process of changing the Presidential Government System, there must be a well-framed communication strategy.

In a process where there are economic problems that directly affect every part of the society, political communication is indispensable for gaining the support of the society and for the process to be successful.

Initiated process work should be well framed by the executives, plus and minus should be explained in detail by experts and relevant/responsible people so that results can be obtained.

Otherwise, someone else frames the process…
